Disocactus schrankii is a species of the genus Disocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the German botanist Franz von Paula Wardrobe .

description

Disocactus schrankii grows strongly branching with ascending angular shoots , which are first reddish, later green and are about 1 to 2 centimeters wide with partly wavy edges. The raised areoles are thorny. The 6 to 7  thorns are white to yellowish, somewhat needle-like and only 1 centimeter long.

The flowers appearing to the side are broad, funnel-shaped, dark red and 10 to 15 centimeters in diameter. The obovate fruits are up to 4.5 inches long and 3.6 inches in diameter. They are somewhat warty with several areoles bearing thorns.

Distribution and systematics

Disocactus schrankii is distributed in the Mexican states of Chiapas , Durango , Jalisco , Mexico , Michoacán , Morelos , Oaxaca and Sinaloa and occurs at altitudes between 1800 and 2800 meters.

It was first described as Cereus schrankii in 1834 by Ludwig Seitz (1792–1866). Wilhelm Barthlott introduced the species to Disocactus in 1991 .
