Disocactus speciosus is a species of the genus Disocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet speciosus means 'magnificent, handsome' and refers to the flowers of the species. Spanish trivial names are “Nopalillo”, “Pitaya de Cerro” and “Santa Marta”.

Disocactus speciosus grows strongly branching with upright, leaning and / or hanging shoots. The 3 to 5 ribbed shoots have a reddish tinge. They grow up to 1 meter long and 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters in diameter. The ribs are strongly toothed. The areoles are present in the notch of the ribs. You are thorny. The 5 to 8 (later up to 25) thorns are 1 to 1.5 centimeters in size. They are pointed and protruding and have a yellowish to brownish color.

The broad, funnel-shaped flowers appear laterally. They are scarlet with a bluish or white sheen, or completely white, and grow to be 11 to 17 inches long and 8 to 13 inches in diameter. The fruits are egg-shaped and 4 to 5 inches long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Disocactus speciosus is distributed in the Mexican states of Chiapas , Colima , Durango , Jalisco , Mexico , Michoacán , Morelos , Oaxaca and Sinaloa as well as in Guatemala .

It was first described as Cactus speciosus in 1803 by Antonio José Cavanilles . Wilhelm Barthlott introduced the species to Disocactus in 1991 .

A distinction is made between the following forms :

  • Disocactus speciosus f. speciosus :
    the flowers are scarlet red.
  • Disocactus speciosus f. amecaensis (Heese) Barthlott :
    The first description as Cereus amecaensis was
    made in 1896 by Emil Heese (1862-1914). Wilhelm Barthlott presented the white-flowering form to Disocactus in 1991 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
