The Sandia District is located in the Sandia Province in the Puno region in southeastern Peru . In 1994 the northern part of the district was spun off and has since formed the Alto Inambari district . The district of Sandia has an area of ​​about 700 km². The 2017 census counted 11,420 inhabitants. In 2007 the population was 11,374. The administrative seat of the district is the provincial capital Sandia at an altitude of 2178  m with 4215 inhabitants (as of 2017). Sandia is located in the Cordillera Carabaya , a mountain range of the Peruvian Eastern Cordillera , on the Río Sandia , the left source river of the Río Inambari .

Geographical location

The district of Sandia is located in the Cordillera Carabaya in the central south of the province of Sandia. The district is traversed by the Río Sandia in a northeastern direction. The district extends in the northeast to the union of the Río Sandia with the Río Huari Huari to the Río Inambari.

The district of Sandia borders in the south on the district Cuyocuyo , in the west on the district Patambuco , in the north on the district Alto Inambari, in the northeast on the district Yanahuaya and in the southeast on the district Quiaca .
