The district of San Juan del Oro is located in the province of Sandia in the Puno region in southeastern Peru . The district was founded on November 7, 1955. It has an area of ​​202 km². The 2017 census counted 4055 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 11,978, in 2007 9828. The administrative seat of the district is the 1320  m high town of San Juan del Oro with 1671 inhabitants (as of 2017). San Juan del Oro is located in the Cordillera Carabaya , a mountain range of the Peruvian Eastern Cordillera , 35 km east-northeast of the provincial capital Sandia . San Juan del Oro is located on the upper reaches of the Río Tambopata . Up the valley is Yanahuaya , down the valley Putina Punco .

Geographical location

The district of San Juan del Oro is located in the Cordillera Carabaya in the southeast of the province of Sandia. The Río Tambopata flows through the district in a northeastern direction.

The district of San Juan del Oro is bordered by the district of Yanahuaya to the south, the district of Alto Inambari to the west and northwest, and the district of San Pedro de Putina Punco to the north and northeast . In the far east the district borders on the Bolivian province of Franz Tamayo .
