The Phara District is located in the Sandia Province in the Puno region in southeastern Peru . The district was founded on May 2, 1854. It has an area of ​​432 km². The 2017 census counted 5853 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 4717, in 2007 it was 4847. The administrative seat of the district is the 3450  m high village Phara with 1498 inhabitants (as of 2017). Phara is located in the Cordillera Carabaya , a mountain range of the Peruvian Eastern Cordillera , almost 30 km northwest of the provincial capital Sandia . Phara lies in a neighboring valley of Limbani .

Geographical location

The Phara district is located in the Cordillera Carabaya in the southwest of the Sandia province. The district extends in the north to the Río Inambari . The area is drained via its left tributary Río Limbani or directly into the Río Inambari.

The Phara district borders in the northeast on the Alto Inambari district , in the southeast on the Patambuco district and in the west on the Limbani district .
