The districts of the Bahamas emerged after the country gained independence in 1973. 21 districts were formed , divided into islands and archipelagos . This division was changed in February 1993, with the number of districts remaining the same. In 1996 the Local Government Act was passed, replacing the old division. This happened because the national government was able to administer the island of New Providence , but not all of the islands in the island state. There were 23 local government districts (local government districts) and New Providence, which was administered by the national government. These 23 local government districts were divided into two types by the Local Government Act. Local government districts of type 1 can be divided into city districts, while those of type 2 are not. In 1999, eight new districts were created, bringing the number to 32.
