Dmitri Stepanowitsch Kotschkin ( Russian Дмитрий Степанович Кочкин , scientific transliteration Dmitrij Stepanovič Kočkin ; born April 25, 1934 in Kirow ) is a former Soviet Nordic combined skier .
Career
Kotschkin competed internationally in special jumping competitions from time to time, but mainly faced the competition in Nordic combined. At the International Ski Games in Le Brassus in 1958 , for example, he finished third in the special jumping competition, while in fourth place he just missed the podium in the combination. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti , Kotschkin took 23rd place in the Nordic Combined. In January 1959 he won in Oberhof . At the North American Ski Championships in March 1959 in Squaw Valley , which served as pre-Olympic competitions, Kochkin won superiorly by more than 30 points.
Kochkin proved his class at the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley . While he was still on the medal course in second place after ski jumping, he slipped down to fifth place in the final ranking after cross-country skiing. Even at the prestigious Czech Marusarzówna Memorial in Zakopane in 1961 , he did not show good mileage, but he saved his lead from the jumping to victory over the Poland Józef Gąsienica . At the 35th Salpauselkä Games in Lahti in early March 1961, however, he narrowly missed the win. Although he was still in the lead after the jump, he finally crossed the finish line in second place, well behind Georg Thoma .
At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Zakopane in 1962 , Kotschkin won the silver medal behind the favored Arne Larsen and ahead of Ole Henrik Fagerås . Kotschkin benefited from the fall of Olympic champion Georg Thoma and his jumping abilities in heavy wind conditions. After the jumping, Kotschkin was third, 1.4 points behind Larsen, but his deficit increased to around six points due to the fact that he was only tenth-best running time. At the first Winter Spartakiad of the Peoples of the USSR in Sverdlovsk in 1962, Kochkin won the combined competition. In 1963, a world ranking of the best athletes in Nordic combined appeared for the first time, in which Kochkin was ranked seventh.
At the national level, he won four championship titles.
