Do As Infinity is a Japanese J-Pop / Rock band consisting of singer Tomiko Van and guitarist Ryo Owatari. Ex-guitarist and founder of the band, Nagao Dai, left the group in 2005. Dai also the name of the band, "comes D o A s I nfinity" as an extension of his name.
style
The band sings mainly in Japanese , but also has pieces in English in their repertoire . Many of her songs are melancholy pieces about love. Their acoustic versions are particularly worth listening to.
Do as Infinity represent their diversity through various excursions into other musical genres such as B. Rock 'n' Roll proven. The singer from DAI has already started a very successful solo project. Her music is often compared with songs by Ayumi Hamasaki , probably the most famous Japanese singer, but also with the group The Brilliant Green . From groups singing in English, bands like The Calling or Hoobastank would be comparable, but with a female lead.
biography
Band formation
Dai Nagao started out as a songwriter for an amateur band. After their dissolution, he continued to write songs and sent them to over 50 record companies in Japan. Avex Trax then hired him as a songwriter for Ayumi Hamasaki and Hitomi .
In 1999, after a casting, Tomiko Van as singer and Ryo Owatari as guitarist were determined. Shortly after they signed a record deal with Avex Trax, the recording of the song Heart began . On September 29th they released their debut single Tangerine Dream and gave their first concerts in Shibuya, Yokohama and Fokuoka. The single landed at number 58 on the charts.
Their second single Heart was released in December and promoted on the Millennium Countdown of their record label Avex Trax. The single thus made it to number 56 in the charts.
With Oasis they got their first entry into the top 30 with position 25. The single was released in late January 2000 and played in a promotional video for Kanebo Cosmetic .
The fourth single, Yesterday & Today , entered the top 10 for the first time. It was the theme song for the drama series Nisennen no Koi . The song Raven also included on the single was taken for the credits of the horror film Uzumaki .
The first four singles all bore the names of popular bands such as Oasis , Heart , Y&T and Tangerine Dream .
Break of Dawn
The first album, Break of Dawn , came out a month after Yesterday & Today , reached number 3 on the charts and sold over 300,000 copies.
In August they released Rumble Fish and their best-known English single, Summer Days . Rumble Fish was the theme song for the film Kamen Gakuen and Summer Days for the OL Police series . Her sixth single, We Are , came out at the end of the year and stayed at position 16 on the charts.
In January 2001, the band first appeared on Japanese television on the Music Station chart show to introduce their new single Desire . From then on they were known all over Japan.
New World
The album New World was released in February 2001 and reached the top of the charts. In May of the same year they went on tour and released their first video collection entitled 9 . This was followed by an advertising contract between the hair care product company LAVENUS and the lead singer.
Week! was released at the end of May and reached number 8 on the charts. The following month, Fukai Mori appeared . The song was featured in the second credits of the anime series Inu Yasha and became one of the band's most successful hits. A new live tour began in November, shortly after their eleventh single Boukensha Tachi was released .
Deep Forest
Deep Forest was their second and last album, which reached number 1 in the charts. It was released in September 2001 and is their biggest success with over 600,000 copies sold.
In January 2002, their record label released the album Various Artists Featuring Songnation for the event of the same name. DAI became known beyond the borders of Japan and gave concerts in Taiwan and Hong Kong. The twelfth single Hi no Ataru Sakamichi was released. In Japan, the band won the 17th Annual Gold Disc award for Best Rock & Pop Album of the Year.
In July, the single Under the Sun / Under the Moon was released and reached position 5 in the charts. DAI performed at the annual event of their label Avex called A-nation and thus played in the eight largest cities in Japan.
Her fourteenth single Shinjitsu no Uta was released in October and was used for the fifth credits by Inu Yasha . Towards the end of the year there was a live tour called Do As Infinity Greatest Year 02 ~ All Standing ~ .
True song
The fourth album True Song was released in December 2002 with a subsequent tour. Her thirteenth single Mahou no kotoba ~ Would You Marry Me? ~ Was released in early 2003 and reached number 4 on the charts. It is one of the most played songs at weddings in Japan. Honjitsu wa Seiten Nari was published in September and featured again at the A-nation event . The seventeenth single Hiiragi was released in November and reached number 7 on the charts.
Gates of Heaven
After the release of the album Gates of Heaven in November 2003, the lead singer Tomiko went on a promotional tour of Japan with the American singer Michelle Branch to market their album. In the summer of 2004, DAI played at concerts in New York and Dallas and performed in Korea due to the Korea & Japan Friendship Week in Jeju .
Need your love
For the release of their album Need Your Love , which was to be their last, they organized another live tour. The album was released in February 2005 and reached chart position 3 with 137,000 sales.
Her twentieth and final single, Tao , was released on July 27 of the same year. It was the theme song for the video game Tales of Legendia and reached number 11 on the charts.
Tape resolution
Her latest single, Tao, is about friends who take different paths in life. Many fans consider this to be the reason for the breakup. Do As Infinity then announced that the band would split on September 29, 2005, six years after the release of their first single. The last concert took place on November 25, 2005 at Nippon Budokan . Three days before that, Dai Nagao released a single called Trust on the official website. A CD version did not appear.
The lead singer Tomiko Van then started her solo career with moderate success. Guitarist Ryo Owatari works on his band Missile Innovation and with other Avex Trax artists such as Ayumi Hamasaki , Ai Ōtsuka and AAA . Songwriter and founder Dai Nagao works with Amasia Landscape and other artists under his True Song Music label .

Since their reunification in 2008, Do as Infinity have regularly released new studio albums.
Producers
Nagao first produced Do As Infinity . He produced it with Seiji Kameda from the third single on. Kameda produced it after Nagao left the band.
