Dobrun Monastery and the narrow-gauge line to Mokra Gora

Dobrun ( Serbian - Cyrillic Добрун ) is a place in the east of Bosnia and Herzegovina , about 5 km from the Serbian border. It belongs to the municipality of Višegrad in the Republika Srpska , one of two entities in the country.

geography

Dobrun is located about 12 km east of Višegrad in the valley of the Rzav , which flows between 1200 m high mountains towards the Drina .

history

Dobrun is located on the old trade route from Sarajevo to Istanbul , which was the most important connection between Bosnia and the capital of the Ottoman Empire , especially after the construction of the bridge over the Drina in Višegrad . The Rzav Gorge east of Dobrun was a bottleneck and was therefore extensively secured with fortifications.

From the Middle Ages to the 19th century, the Dobrun Monastery played an important strategic role due to its border location between the territories of the Bogumils (or later the Ottoman-dominated Bosnia) and the Serbian Orthodox Church .

In the summer of 1906 Dobrun was connected to the Bosnian narrow-gauge railway network.

In the Bosnian War , the entire Muslim population of the place - almost half of the population - was expelled; even today many houses have not been rebuilt. During this time police forces from Serbia were also stationed in Dobrun.

In August 2004, Dobrun hosted a meeting between the Prime Ministers of Serbia and the Republika Srpska Vojislav Koštunica and Dragan Mikerević . On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the First Serbian Uprising , they unveiled a memorial near the monastery in front of 15,000 people. Also present were Patriarch Pavle and the President of the RS, Dragan Čavić , who took the opportunity to point out the inviolability of the entities.

population

At the 1991 census, Dobrun had 1,419 inhabitants. Of these, 736 identified themselves as Serbs (51.87%) and 664 as Bosniaks (46.79%).

Attractions

A little east of the village - north of the Rzav - is the Serbian Orthodox Dobrun Monastery. It has been renovated in recent years and belongs to the Sarajevo Eparchy . The remains of the wall paintings in the chapel and the extensive icon collection of the Orthodox Church in Sarajevo, which was transferred to Dobrun after the Bosnian War, are significant in terms of art history. High on the surrounding rock faces are the ruins of the old fortifications that controlled the western exit of the Rzav Gorge.

traffic

Dobrun is on Magistral Road 5 ( Sarajevo - Užice ); In addition, a regional road branches off towards Priboj (via the border crossing at Uvac ) to the south. The place has a station on the narrow-gauge line of the Bosnian Eastern Railway , which was reconstructed in 2006.
