action

As a young Cambodian boy, Pang was once found neglected in a garbage dump by members of an organized crime syndicate , and placed in the service of unscrupulous mafia bosses who drilled him into a merciless, command-receiving killer . One day, the now grown-up man in his mid-twenties was transferred to Hong Kong under inhumane circumstances to kill the lawyer Li . The taciturn Pang carries out his contract murder in cold blood in a well-frequented restaurant in front of countless witnesses and his apathetic client, the long-time husband of the victim - Judge Li.

The murder search is initially in the dark, as neither the eyewitnesses nor a surveillance camera in the vicinity can describe the perpetrator precisely. The headstrong and controversial Inspector Wai nevertheless succeeds in following his instincts to track down the fleeing murderer, whom he catches with the help of his colleague Fat Lam . However, the two state officials underestimate Pang, who can fatally injure two bystanders and Fat Lam before escaping slightly injured. Pang, who only speaks Khmer , initially wanders through the big city completely on his own and without any connection to his contact person, then remembers his youth and finds shelter in a garbage dump with the autistic Yue. He struggles to make friends with the young woman, an illegal immigrant , whom he frees from her despotic, sexually past father. Pang develops caring, almost fatherly feelings for the battered Yue, who longs to go on a boat trip.

Meanwhile, the restless Wai, the son of a highly decorated corrupt police hero, is eagerly looking for the whereabouts of Pang, whose pursuit he begins with a delay. When Pang gives the frightened Yue with an infected foot to a clinic so that she can receive medical care, the police seize the opportunity. She uses the young woman as a decoy, but her plan fails miserably. The hired killer, who is wanted on a wanted list and who leaves a real trail of blood, frees his companion in a wild shooting, brutally killing all officers present except for Wai, who sinks unconscious to the ground. Using all his strength, the wounded killer tows the freed Yue into a boat and travels with her to his home country - Cambodia .

Once there, he reports to his foster father, the patriarchal leader of a clan of street fighters, who, however, dislikes him because he has now become useless due to a nationwide manhunt. The unequal couple is now forced to roam the country restless and homeless, earns their living together with temporary work and goes through a phase of happiness. From mutual sympathy, affection develops over weeks. Yue eventually becomes pregnant. A doctor advises the destitute couple to have the baby in an expensive operation by caesarean section , as otherwise he fears complications for the mother.

In complete desperation, the responsible Pang turns to his former foster father with a request to give him a new job. His distant mentor, however, plays a perverse game, and appears to agree; he also makes common cause with the former investigator Wai, who came to Cambodia at some point to take revenge for the death of his colleagues. The leader of the mafia-like clan let the recovered Wai train with him and compete in bloody, profitable competitions, so that he grew into a feared street fighter. In return, the clan boss promised to extradite Pang soon.

At the end of the film, Pang tries to avoid the duel, but it comes to a duel with his strengthened opponent. The pregnant Yue sacrifices herself in this hopeless situation and dies, while Pang Wai is able to kill. In one of the last takes, the badly injured Pang cuts a living baby out of Yue's belly, but then succumbs to his injuries and dies.

Reviews

“Nothing less than new standards, at least in contemporary Hong Kong film, this extremely taciturn killer thriller, immersed in a monochrome blue-cast look and always aiming for violent impact hits, sets new standards [...] Artful imagery, excellent actors and experimental, but never bumpy montages promise a lot of fun even for more demanding film fans , the spectacular use of force should vouch for noise in the press forest and word of mouth.
