Domenico Cresti
Domenico Cresti (called Il Passignano , also known as Domenico Passignano; * around January 29, 1559 in Passignano [district of Barberino Tavarnelle ]; † May 17, 1638 in Florence ) was an Italian painter of the late Renaissance and Mannerism .
Life
Cresti was born the son of Michele Cresti. In other sources, a Cristofano Cresti is named as the father, who is said to be given in the baptismal register of the Pieve di San Pietro a Sillano. At his father's request, he was initially earmarked for training in book art. However, since he became interested in painting at an early age, he decided that he should receive training in Florence with Giovanni Battista Naldini and Girolamo Macchietti . On trips to Rome and Venice he got to know the style of Jacopo Tintoretto and was influenced by it. He traveled to Venice as assistant to Federico Zuccari , who commissioned him to carry out the frescoes by Giorgio Vasari in Santa Maria del Fiore .
He quickly became known through his paintings, which he executed with little color. This is the reason that many of his works have been damaged by the weather. Cresti also painted portraits of famous contemporaries such as Galileo Galilei and Michelangelo .
He was the father-in-law of Pietro Sorri .
