Domenico Sestini

Domenico Sestini (born August 10, 1750 in Florence , † June 8, 1832 there ) was an Italian librarian , numismatist and archaeologist .

After attending school, he joined the Piarist Order . In 1775 he went to Sicily , where he was librarian to the Prince of Biscari in Catania and was responsible for its collection . From 1777 to 1792 he made numerous trips to the East, Asia Minor , Mesopotamia , Greece and the Balkans . During these trips he mainly dealt with archaeological remains and coins, but also showed himself to be a knowledgeable botanist , ornithologist and mammaloge . Between 1804 and 1810 he lived in Berlin , where he worked on the holdings of the Münzkabinett . In 1810 he went to Paris , then he became the librarian of the Grand Duchess Elisa Baciocchi in Florence . After a stay in Hungary he was in 1814 by the Grand Duke Ferdinand III. appointed grand ducal antiquarian and professor at the University of Pisa . In 1820 he became a corresponding member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres in Paris.

He published numerous publications, especially on numismatics, including parts of the collection of Carlo d'Ottavio Fontana in three volumes.
