Domina is a red wine variety . This new breed from the varieties Blauer Portugieser and Pinot Noir is only significant in Germany.

Descent, origin

Blauer Portugieser × Pinot Noir

The Domina was bred in 1927 by Peter Morio by crossing the grape varieties Blauer Portugieser and Pinot Noir for the Geilweilerhof Institute for Grapevine Breeding , and was subsequently treated in breeding by Bernhard Husfeld in the 1950s. The entry in the list of varieties took place in 1974. The information provided by the breeder about the parents of the crosses has since been confirmed by DNA analysis.

Ampelographic features

  • The shoot tip is hairy with white wool.
  • The small leaves are yellow-green and woolly on the underside. Large leaves are slightly blistered and five-, rarely seven-lobed. The peduncle is heavily overlapped.
  • The grape is medium to large in size, dense berries, shouldered. The berries are blue-black in color, round and medium-sized.

Maturity: medium late

The variety has strong shoot growth and is not susceptible to trickling during flowering . The variety shows good frost resistance, has a medium susceptibility to botrytis and also has good chlorosis resistance.

Wine

The wines are usually very dark, rich in color and also suitable as cover wines . In good locations, extract-rich wines with a high tannin content can be produced. Depending on the location and age, the acid values can be relatively high.

distribution

The main distribution area of ​​the variety is mainly the Franconian wine-growing region . In 2015, 380 hectares were planted with the Domina grape variety in Germany . The area has been constant for several years. In 2006, 395 hectares of arable land were still planted, after 187 hectares had been surveyed in 1999. Smallest stands are also known in Switzerland (0.08 ha, as of 2009).
