Silvius von Kessel

Silvius Carlos Benedict von Kessel (born February 20, 1965 in Oldenburg (Oldb) ) is a German organist , composer and university professor . He is the cathedral organist at the Catholic Cathedral of St. Marien in Erfurt and honorary professor for organ at the Liszt School of Music in Weimar .

Life

Silvius von Kessel began studying Catholic church music at the Folkwang University in Essen in 1986 , which he completed in 1991 with the A-exam (with distinction). Formative teachers were Gisbert Schneider (organ) and Godehard Joppich (Gregorian chant). From 1991 he received a DAAD scholarship and studied in Paris with Olivier Latry , titular organist at the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral . He completed this postgraduate course in June 1994 with a concert diploma.

As his first full-time position, he was appointed cathedral organist and cathedral cantor at Erfurt Cathedral in 1994 as the successor to Wilhelm Kümpel . Since then he has also been working as an organ expert and commissioner for church music for the diocese of Erfurt. From 1999 he was the initiator and director of the international organ competition "Domberg-Prediger" in Erfurt, which took place in 1999, 2002 and 2005. The newly founded “Bach | Liszt Orgelwettbewerb Erfurt-Weimar-Merseburg” in cooperation with the Weimar University of Music, which took place for the first time in 2008, emerged from this competition.

In addition to his work as a church musician, he had a teaching position for organ at the Liszt School of Music in Weimar from 1995-2004 . He took up this again in the 2007 winter semester. On June 24th, 2008 he was appointed honorary professor for organ at a ceremony on the occasion of the dies academicus of the university.

Since July 2004 he has been the artistic director of the “ Thuringian Bach Weeks ” festival, the largest classical music festival in the Free State of Thuringia, and chairman of the association of the same name.

In September 2019, the “Missa Cum Jubilo” composed by him in the years 2017-2018 was premiered in Erfurt Cathedral St. Marien . It is a setting of the Ordinarium Missae of the same name for four vocal soloists, mixed choir, children's choir, organ and large orchestra . At the premiere, u. a. the Staatskapelle Weimar and Thomas Bloch ( Ondes Martenot ) with. The work was published by Ries und Erler / Berlin .

Silvius von Kessel is married to Christine, b. Countess von Königsmarck , and has five children with her. He is a cousin of the actress Sophie von Kessel .
