Dominik Martin Christopher Marcus Schirmer (born March 2, 1976 in Hagen ) is a German musician , composer , singer-songwriter and university lecturer. He became known as the first German lecturer at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts in England, which Paul McCartney co-founded .

biography

Schirmer grew up in Hagen. He has been musically and artistically active since childhood. With the accordion orchestra of the Hagen Music School, he won the state competition in North Rhine-Westphalia in the early 1990s . Since his youth he has composed and played a. a. with the musician Tim Neuhaus in band projects in his home country. Mostly self-taught, Schirmer received piano lessons in 1995 from the Hagen pianist Heinz Emanuel Krause. Schirmer was also an actor at the Hagen City Theater from 1993 to 1996.

After graduating from high school in 1996, freelance journalistic work at Radio Hagen and a semester in pedagogy , philosophy and Catholic theology at the Ruhr University Bochum , he moved to the Netherlands in 1997 and studied jazz piano with Sebastian Altekamp at the ArtEZ University of Music in Enschede . In 2001 he moved to England to study at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts , where he a. a. trained in songwriting, composition and improvisation by Paul McCartney and Mike Walker .

In 2004 Schirmer won the Greenberg Jazz Award and has since performed at jazz festivals. After completing his studies, he worked on composition commissions for Cunard Line Cruises a. a. for the ship orchestra of the " Queen Mary 2 " and broadcasts on radio ( Brontes Sisters (2005), broadcast by RBB and SWR ). His music was also used for the short film “ Jenseits von Gut und Bad ” (2005) by Bernd Latzel. He founded a music agency and a record label ( Treewalk Records , 2008). He also worked as musical director for music and show productions ( Obscenes , first performance at the Unity Theater in Liverpool, 2004) and as a pianist for the English jazz singer Maria Dunsmore (since 2004). His world trips on cruise ships, on which he was engaged with his bands, inspired him to musical works in popular music as well as in the classical field ( Con Occuli Ceradi for accordion orchestra).

In 2008 he published his first work " a day in the top of the tree" under his label "Treewalk Records" (LC 18963) , a song story set by the Berlin illustrator Annabelle von Sperber. This began a solo career as a singer-songwriter. In 2011 Schirmer released his second solo album " Keep it simple ", followed by "In Between" in 2014, both also released on Treewalk Records. He tours Germany solo and with his band.

Teaching

He maintained his close ties to the music scene in Liverpool and the North West of England and was appointed lecturer in composition at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts in 2008 . English composers Ian Gardiner, Paul Mitchell-Davidson and Gary Carpenter previously held this post. He also teaches jazz piano, performance, songwriting and music theory . Schirmer also deals with the topic of universals in music perception . Since the end of 2015 he has been responsible for the conception and didactic content of the courses and lessons at the new online music learning portal Skoove.
