Donabate ( Irish : Domhnach Bat ) is a small coastal town and peninsula in Ireland , about 20 km (12 miles) north-northeast of Dublin . The city is located on a peninsula between the Rogerstown Estuary in the north and the Broadmeadow Estuary in the south. Donabate is in the County of Fingal in the former County of Dublin .

geography

The Donabate Peninsula has a characteristic hammer-head shape. This is due to pronounced spits that protrude south and north into the respective estuary . The northern spit carries Portrane Beach , which almost reaches the town of Rush . Only the Rogerstown Estuary separates the beaches. A strip of low limestone cliffs south of Portrane stretches to Donabate Beach , to the eastern end of the southern spit. The Broadmeadow Estuary is similarly enclosed. It is fed by the Broadmeadow River . Important habitats have emerged in the relatively calm waters of the estuaries. You are under the protection of the Ramsar Convention .

history

In 1912 Donabate had a population of 734 people in 150 houses. It remained a small village for a century. However, in recent decades it has seen rapid population growth as transport links to Dublin have greatly improved. While 1868 inhabitants were counted in 1996, in 2011 there were 8730 inhabitants.

Donabate is now part of Fingal, North County Dublin . The Donabate-Portrane Peninsula is part of the Swords constituency (local electoral area). This constituency is numerically the largest in Fingal County and sends five County Councilors to Fingal County Council . With regard to national elections, the city is part of Dublin North (Dáil Éireann) constituency , which sends four MPs (Teachta Dála) to the House of Representatives (Dáil Éireann).

The Donabate Parish Council (Donabate Portrane Community Council) is the local municipality.

Newbridge Estate

Newbridge House, Donabate

A historic building is the "Big House and Estate" at Newbridge Demesne. The Newbridge House is a Georgian property, which in 1736 for Charles Cobbe , the Archbishop of Dublin was built. It is set in an 18th century landscape park with 150 hectares (370 acres). The property was acquired by the Cobbe family by Fingal County Council in 1985 and is now a public park. The family has an apartment in the main building.

Newbridge House was also the setting for the 1965 film The Spy Who Came In The Cold . In 2009 a valuable portrait of William Shakespeare was rediscovered in the drawing room of the house.

Transition Town Donabate Portrane

There is an active community in Donabate that is committed to the Transition Town Movement . Projects include a weekly market day and a project to convert the unused St Ita's Gardens & Farm into a farming community.

In 2008, plans were published to convert the Rogerstwon Estuary into a nature reserve . It was suggested to create new entrances, parking spaces and paths and to set up information boards. In order to improve the character of the landscape, hedges should be created and pastures mowed and cattle returned to pasture.

Rogerstown Estuary

The Rogerstown Estuary is an important wetland area. It is subject to various protections including the Statutory Nature Reserve . The conservation organization Bird Watch Ireland owns land along the shore and is committed to preserving the land as a nature reserve despite its proximity to the Dublin metropolitan area. The Bird Watch Ireland branch has two observation huts.

Broadmeadow Estuary

The Broadmeadow Estuary is also a Special Area of ​​Conservation (SAC) and Special Protection Area (SPA). It is home to an internationally important colony of the Brent goose as well as other nationally important breeding grounds for other bird species.

The Donabate railway station in the city center is on the main line Dublin- Belfast and from the line Northern Commuter trains on operated between Dublin and Dundalk run. Viaduct collapse
On August 21, 2009, the
6:07 pm train from Balbriggan Railway Station to Connolly passed the Broadmeadow viaduct when the driver noticed that the route for the northbound rail section was giving way. The train was able to leave the section unharmed, the driver alerted those responsible and the damaged viaduct was renewed over several weeks.

Roads
The regional road R126 connects Portrane with the R127 and the M1 motorway . Dublin Bus from Swords to Portrane goes to Donabate.
