Donald Allister

Donald Spargo Allister (born August 27, 1952 in Liverpool , England ) is a diocesan Bishop of the Church of England . He was named Bishop of Peterborough on November 5, 2009 , and installed in office on April 17, 2010.

Life

Allister was born in Liverpool to a manager in the Liverpool Port Authority and a nurse. He attended the private school Birkenhead School and studied at the University of Cambridge in Peterhouse, first medicine, then theology.

After his ordination , Allister was a curate at a church in Hyde, a suburb of Manchester , from 1976 to 1979 , then at a church in Sevenoaks until 1983 , and then in Cheadle near Manchester. In 2001 he was mentioned in the media when he spoke out against premarital intercourse . From 2002 to 2010 he was Archdeacon of the Diocese of Chester .

Following the death of Bishop Ian Cundy in May 2009, the appointment of Allister as his successor was announced on November 5, 2009. Allister received episcopal ordination on March 25, 2010 at St Paul's Cathedral and was installed in office on April 17, 2010 in Peterborough Cathedral .

Allister is married and his wife Janice is a general practitioner. The couple have a son and two daughters.

Membership in the House of Lords

On January 7, 2014, Allister, in his capacity as Bishop of Peterborough on the principle of seniority, became the next senior bishop in the Church of England as Spiritual Lord member of the House of Lords . He was officially inducted into the House of Lords on February 4, 2014, with the assistance of David Urquhart , Bishop of Birmingham, and Stephen Platten , Bishop of Wakefield.
