David Urquhart, The Lord Bishop of Birmingham

David Andrew Urquhart KCMG (born April 14, 1952 in Scotland ) is a British Anglican theologian and since 2006 Bishop of Birmingham in the Church of England .

Life

Urquhart grew up in the Scottish Highlands . He attended rugby school in Warwickshire and studied at Ealing College Business School , where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1970 . After graduating, he volunteered as a development worker in Uganda for one year in 1971 . He then worked for British Petroleum in various positions for ten years .

To prepare for the priesthood, he studied theology at Wycliffe Hall College, University of Oxford . In 1984 he was ordained a clergyman . From 1984 to 1987 he was parish vicar at St. Nicholas Church in Kingston upon Hull in the Diocese of York . In 1987 he became Dean ( Team Vicar ) for the district of Drypool; he held this church office until 1992. In 1992 he became pastor ( vicar ) at Holy Trinity Church in Coventry . In 2000 he became auxiliary bishop (suffragan bishop) of Birkenhead. In May 2006 he was appointed Bishop of Birmingham. On November 17, 2006, he was officially inducted into office at Birmingham Cathedral .

Urquhart has been Chairman of the Church Mission Society since 1994 and Chairman of the Wirral Local Strategic Partnership since 2002 . In 2005 he was named Prelate of the Order of St. Michael and St. George . Urquhart is the Archbishop of Canterbury's appointee for Church Anglican relations with China .

Urquhart is unmarried. His hobbies include hiking and walking in the Scottish Highlands, playing active fives and making movies .

Membership in the House of Lords

Urquhart has been a member of the House of Lords as Spiritual Lord since 2010 . He succeeds David Charles James , the former Bishop of Bradford . On October 26, 2010, Urquhart was officially introduced in the House of Lords.
