Michael Whinney

Michael Humphrey Dickens Whinney (born July 8, 1930 in Chelsea , London - † February 3, 2017 ) was a British Anglican theologian . He was Bishop of Southwell in the Church of England from 1985 to 1988 .

life and career

Whinney was born to Humphrey Whinney and his wife Evelyn Low. He was a great-great-grandson of the English writer Charles Dickens . He attended Charterhouse School and studied at Pembroke College of Cambridge University . He first worked as an accountant . In 1957 he was ordained a deacon ; In 1958 he was ordained a priest . His priests career he began as a vicar ( Curate ) in the district Rainham in London. He then held two positions in the London borough of Bermondsey , first as pastor ( priest in charge) of the Cambridge University Mission Settlement. From 1966 he was pastor ( vicar ) at St James' with Christ Church in the Diocese of Southwark . From 1973 to 1982 he was Archdeacon ( Archdeacon ) of Southwark.

In 1982 he was ordained a bishop . From 1982 to 1985 he was suffragan bishop in the diocese of Birmingham in the Church of England as "Bishop of Aston" . In 1985 he became Bishop of Southwell in the Church of England, succeeding Denis Wakeling ; there he remained in office until his retirement. In 1988 he retired. He was succeeded as Bishop of Southwell by Patrick Harris . After his retirement he was Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Birmingham from 1988 to 1995 ( Assistant Bishop in Birmingham ). From 1992 to 1995 he was a member of the cathedral chapter and resident canon at St Philip's Cathedral in Birmingham. Since 1995 he has been an Honorary Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Birmingham.

From 2005 to 2006 Whinney took over an official church office again. After John Sentamu's appointment as Archbishop of York , he served as Bishop of Birmingham on a provisional basis during the interregnum until David Urquhart took office in November 2006. He was a member of the evangelical wing of the Church of England.

Whinney married Veronica Webster in 1958. The marriage had three children, two sons and a daughter.
