Colin Buchanan (Bishop)

Colin Ogilvie Buchanan (born August 9, 1934 ) is a British Anglican bishop and theologian. He was Rector of St John's College in Nottingham (1979-1985) and Bishop of Aston (1985-1989) and Woolwich (1996-2004).

life and career

Buchanan was born on August 9, 1934 to Robert Ogilvie Buchanan and Kathleen Mary Buchanan (nee Parnell). He first went to Whitgift School and then attended high school . He then studied at Lincoln College in Oxford , where he did his Bachelor of Arts , which was later declared a Master of Arts . From 1959 he attended Trinity College in Bristol to prepare for his ordination there .

Buchanan was ordained a deacon in the Church of England in 1961 and a priest in 1962 . From 1961 to 1964 he was a curate in a parish in Cheadle, Chester Diocese.

Buchanan married in 1963 and has two children.

From 1964 onwards, Buchanan worked at St John's College for 21 years in various positions ( librarian , registrar, assistant director) before becoming director in 1979. He held this office until 1985 when he went to Southwell Minster as a canon .

After his consecration as bishop in 1985, he was for the period 1985-1989 Bishop of Aston. He served as vice bishop for the Diocese of Rochester from 1989-1996 and for the Diocese of Southwark from 1990-1991. In addition, Buchanan was a member of the bishopric of the general synod from 1990 to 2004 and vicar in Gillingham until 1996 . He then returned full-time to the episcopate and was Bishop of Woolwich from 1996 to 2004.

In July 2004, Buchanan gave up his full-time bishopric. However, he still served as honorary vice bishop in the Diocese of Bradford from 2004 and in the Diocese of Ripon and Leeds from 2005 to 2014. Since 2015 Buchanan has been honorary vice bishop in the Diocese of Leeds.
