Patrick Harris

Patrick Burnet Harris (born September 30, 1934 ) is a British Anglican theologian . He was Bishop of Southwell in the Church of England from 1988 to 1999 .

Harris was born to Edward Harris and his wife Astrid Kendall. He attended St Albans School in the county of Hertfordshire and studied at Keble College of Oxford University . There he graduated as a Master of Arts [Master of Arts (Oxbridge and Dublin)]. In 1960 he was ordained a deacon ; In 1961 he was ordained a priest . He began his priestly career as a vicar ( curate ) at St Ebbes' Church in Oxford . Then he went to South America as a mission priest . From 1969 to 1973 he was Archdeacon ( Archdeacon ) of the Salta Province in northwestern Argentina . He was ordained a bishop in May 1973 . In 1973 he became "Bishop of Northern Argentina" in the Anglican Church of the Southern Cone of America . In 1980 he returned to Great Britain. He was first pastor ( rector ) of Kirkheaton . He was then until 1988 Secretary ( Secretary ) of the Partnership for World Mission of the Church of England. In 1988 he became Bishop of Southwell in the Church of England , succeeding Michael Whinney . In 1999 he retired. He was succeeded as Bishop of Southwell by George Henry Cassidy . After his retirement he served from 1999 to 2005 as Honorary Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Lincoln . He has been an Honorary Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Gloucester since 2005 . In addition, since 1999 he has held the office of honorary assistant bishop in the Diocese in Europe ( Diocese in Europe ).

Harris also took a stand as a bishop on the issue of homosexuality . He was a member of the Church of England Committee on Homosexuality, chaired by Bishop Richard Harries , Bishop of Oxford. While emphasizing the primacy of heterosexual marriage in God's plan of creation , he also took the position that the Church of England condemn homophobia and discrimination. He spoke out against lowering the age of consensual homosexual acts from 18 to 16 years of age.

Harris married his wife Valerie Pilbrow in 1968, whom he had met during his vicariate in Oxford. His wife is a trained parish worker . The marriage had three children, two sons and a daughter.

Membership in the House of Lords

Harris served in his capacity as Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham from August 1995 until his retirement as Bishop of Southwell in April 1999 as Spiritual Lord of the House of Lords . In July 1998 he voted in the House of Lords against the Crime and Disorder Bill, which provided for a lowering of the minimum age for consensual sexual intercourse among homosexuals.
