Denis Wakeling

John Denis Wakeling MC (born December 12, 1918 in Leicester , † October 10, 2004 in Wimborne Minster , Dorset ) was a British soldier in the Royal Marines and later a clergyman of the Church of England , who was Bishop of Southwell for 15 years and 11 years long was a member of the House of Lords .

Life

After visiting St Michael's Limpfield, a school of Church Mission Society Wakeling began a study of the subject Classical Studies at St Catharine's College of the University of Cambridge . He later joined the Royal Marines and served during the Second World War in Italy with the 40 Royal Marine Commando , where he served as a squad leader during a combat mission “because of his courage and exemplary behavior while conducting a commando operation under heavy enemy fire from the Yugoslav coast “ Was awarded the Military Cross in 1945 . In 1946 he retired as a major from active military service.

After the end of the war he studied at the seminary of Ridley Hall College and was ordained a deacon in 1947 and then a priest in 1948 . He was then from 1947 to 1952 chaplain at Clare College, University of Cambridge and from 1952 to 1959 Vicar of the Parish of Emmanuel in Plymouth , before he was between 1957 and 1959 Prebend of St. Peter's Cathedral in Exeter . He was then vicar of the parish of Barking until 1965 and then archdeacon of West Ham from 1965 to 1970 .

In 1970 he was ordained Bishop of Southwell as the successor to Gordon Savage and held this position until his replacement by Michael Whinney in 1985. In 1974 he was one of the 21 longest- serving bishops alongside the five highest bishops of the Church of England as a so-called spiritual lord ( Lord Spiritual ) a member of the House of Lords and was a member until the end of his tenure as Bishop of Southwell in 1984. During that time he also served as Chairman of the Church of England's Council of Bishops for Evangelism from 1976 to 1979 .
