Donald C. Kiraly

Donald C. Kiraly (* 3. November 1953 in Charlottesville , Virginia , USA ) is an American linguist with the work focusing on foreign language teaching and translator training.

Life

Donald C. Kiraly studied Political Science at Cleveland State University and graduated in June 1976 with a Bachelor of Arts. This was followed by a Master of Arts in International Relations from Florida State University , which he completed in August 1977. Kiraly then worked as an English teacher at the National Institute of Applied Sciences in Lyon ( France ) (September 1977-June 1981) and at the Lawton School in Gijón ( Spain ) (September 1981-July 1982). At the same time, he completed a Master of Arts in Teaching of French at the University of Illinois . This was followed by employment as an English teacher at the International Chamber of Commerce in Roanne (France) (January 1983 to June 1983) and at the Department of Translation, Linguistics and Cultural Studies (FTSK) at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in Germersheim . Donald C. Kiraly has been employed at the FTSK as a research assistant since December 1984.

Kiraly also worked as a freelance translator in the fields of business, viticulture, tourism, public administration and banking from 1984 to 2008. In January 1990 he received the Ph.D. with his dissertation "Toward a Systematic Approach to Translation Skills Instruction" at the University of Illinois. He was visiting professor at the Monterey Institute of International Studies in Monterey , ( California ) from August to November 1999 and at the Ecole Supérieure d'Interprètes et Traducteurs of the University of Paris III from September 2008 to August 2012. Since 1990, Kiraly has written and published articles and articles with a focus on foreign language didactics and translator training.

Awards

Donald C. Kiraly was awarded the Internal Teaching Prize of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in the winter semester 2012/2013.
