Donald E. Wimber (born January 2, 1930 in California , USA, † October 22, 1997 in Sydney ) was a biologist who carried out research in cytogenetics . He was also known as an orchid breeder.

Wimber studied biology at San Diego State University and Claremont College in Pomona . His PhD supervisor was Professor Lee W. Lenz at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden. After receiving his doctorate in 1956 at Claremont College, he worked as a student until 1957 for the Dos Pueblos Orchid Company and carried out studies on chromosomes from orchids, 1958–1960 and 1961–1963 at Brookhaven National Laboratory , 1960–1961 at the Royal Cancer Hospital in London .

In 1963 he received an associate professorship in biology at the University of Oregon , 1968-1992 as a full professor and lived in Eugene , Lane County, Oregon, USA.

Also in 1963 he published a paper in which he described a process to reproduce orchids of the genus Cymbidium via cell cultures ( plant tissue culture ). This made it possible to multiply the plants quickly and cheaply in large numbers. He used his knowledge of chromosome numbers to cross orchid hybrids and create tetraploid plants.

Honors

Wimber received the National Institutes of Health Career Development Award . For his services to orchid breeding, he was awarded the Gold Medal of Achievement of the American Orchid Society (1991) and the Westonbirt Medal of the Royal Horticultural Society (1993).
