Donald Herod Peterson (born October 22, 1933 in Winona , State of Mississippi , USA ; † May 27, 2018 ) was an American astronaut .

Peterson received a bachelor's degree from West Point Military Academy in 1955 and a master's degree in nuclear engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology in 1962 . After West Point, Peterson worked as a pilot instructor , nuclear weapons specialist and fighter pilot with the United States Air Force .

MOL

In 1967, Peterson was selected for the US Air Force's MOL program . He was intended to be the crew of the military space station until the program was discontinued in 1969.

In 1969, Peterson was accepted into the NASA astronaut team. He was a member of the support team for the Apollo 16 mission .

STS-6

On April 4, 1983, Peterson flew into space for the first and only time as a mission specialist on the maiden flight of the space shuttle Challenger . The cargo consisted of the TDRS-1 satellite and some experiments. On this mission, Peterson and Story Musgrave performed the first space exit from a space shuttle .

At the end of 1984, Peterson left NASA and has since worked as a consultant in the field of manned spaceflight.

Private

Peterson's marriage to his wife Bonnie had three children.
