Donatia is the only genus of plants in the subfamily Donatioideae in the Stylidiaceae family. It contains only two species that are only found in the southern hemisphere . The generic name honors the Italian doctor and natural scientist Vitaliano Donati (1717–1762).
description
The two Donatia species are relatively small, perennial herbaceous plants . They form firm cushions with a diameter of about 1 meter. The simple, sessile leaves sit in small rosettes . Stipules are missing.
The single, terminal, sessile flowers are radial symmetry to weakly zygomorphic and hermaphroditic. The double perianth consists of three to seven free sepals and five to ten free petals . There are two to three free stamens . Two or three carpels are one under constant ovary fused with an equal number of styluses as the number of carpels. There are fruit capsules formed.
distribution
They grow in the cold (permafrost zone) to temperate zones with a disjoint area , on the one hand in New Zealand and Tasmania , on the other hand in southern South America .
Systematics
The genus Donatia was founded in 1775 by Johann Reinhold Forster and Johann Georg Adam Forster in Characteres Generum Plantarum , 5 with the first publication by Donatia fascicularis J.R. Forst. & G.Forst. set up.
The subfamily Donatioideae is classified by some authors as a separate family Donatiaceae.

- Donatia fascicularis J.R. Forst. & G.Forst. (Syn .: Donatia magellanica Lam. ): Home is the Antarctic South America ( Tierra del Fuego and South Patagonia ). The number of chromosomes is 2n = 48.
- Donatia novae-zelandiae Hook. f. : Home are subalpine mountain regions of the North and South Island of New Zealand, Stewart Island and Tasmania. The dark green, 5 to 10 mm long leaves are tightly overlapping in small rosettes. The small, white flowers are about 5 mm in diameter and appear from late spring and summer.
