features

The Danube rump reaches a body length of up to 21 centimeters and has a stocky and high-backed body with a blunt snout and a terminal mouth. It is very similar to the ruff ( G. cernuus ), from which it can be distinguished by a significantly higher back and a more compact body. The color is gray to metallic with irregular and, in contrast to those of the ruff, always vertically oriented spots. The front part of the clearly two-part dorsal fin is bluish in color with dark spots, the first ray of the anal fin usually ends in a free tip. At the edge of the gill cover there are up to 4, but mostly 2, spines.

distribution

The Danube ruffle is endemic in the lower reaches of the Danube and its tributaries. Accordingly, it occurs in Germany , Austria, Bulgaria , Hungary , the Czech Republic , Serbia and Slovakia , among others . It lives mainly in rivers, but is also found in reservoirs and standing oxbow lakes.

Way of life

Very little is known about the way of life of the Danube ruffle. It probably lives in the area of the river bed and is often found in the same body of water with the rudder. It is believed that this species is less adaptable to change and is endangered by water engineering and water pollution.
