Dōngfāng hóng ( Chinese  東方 紅  /  东方 红 , Pinyin dōngfāng hóng , "The East is red" ) is the film adaptation of a Chinese musical .

history

The musical was produced under the formal patronage of Zhou Enlai on the 15th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and premiered on October 2, 1964 in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing . More than 3,500 people were involved in the preparation from July 1964 and the performance. The film was completed in 1965 .

It is a film adaptation of a musical epic with a large mixed choir and an orchestra of Chinese and European instruments. The stage performers are actors , dancers and acrobats . The plot is characterized by revolutionary songs and dances. A speaker leads through the action.

content

The film begins with a dance with sunflowers ( 《葵花 向 太阳》 , Kuíhuā xiàng tàiyáng ) and the well-known song " The East is Red " ( 《东方 红》 , Dōngfāng hóng ), a folk song from Northern Shaanxi , that of Lǐ Huànzhī ( 李焕 之 ) and provided with a new text by Lǐ Yǒuyuán ( 李有源 ).

The story of the Chinese Revolution from the Opium Wars in the middle of the 19th century through the Long March to the founding of the People's Republic in 1949 is presented.

The film ends with the establishment of the People's Republic of China and closes with the International in the Chinese translation of Qu Qiubai , with the conductor turning to the audience in the Great Hall of the People, who stand up and sing along.
