The Alf-Bullay double-decker bridge , also known as the Bullay Moselle bridge , is a bridge over the Moselle between Alf and Bullay . What is special about this structure is that it was Germany's first double-decker bridge. The Moselle route runs over the upper chord and the L 199 road runs on the lower chord. After the railway line has passed Bullay and the Moselle over the combined rail and road bridge, it flows directly into the Prinzenkopf tunnel on the other side of the Moselle .
history
The 314 meter long bridge was built between 1875 and 1878 with the construction of the Koblenz - Trier railway as part of the cannon railway. Initially it was planned as a pure railway bridge. After the surrounding communities and the district as well as entrepreneurs contributed financially, the Prussian government approved the construction of a double-decker bridge for rail and road.
The box-shaped steel grid construction with a total weight of 1400 tons spans the Moselle with six single-span girders and five river piers. As the transport volume increased, the bridge had to be rebuilt and reinforced in 1928–1929. Together with the two double-decker bridges of the Biggetalbahn, the structure is unique of its kind in Germany.
During the Second World War , supplies to the Western Front ran across the bridge , which is why it has often been the target of Allied bombing attacks since 1944. On February 10, 1945, it was destroyed in an air raid by four P-47D Thunderbolts of the 368th Fighter Group of the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF). After the approval of the French military governor Marie-Pierre Kœnig , the bridge was rebuilt and put into operation on April 24, 1947. Further renovation measures were carried out by Deutsche Bahn between 1999 and 2000 .
Monument protection
The Alf-Bullay double-decker bridge is a protected cultural monument under the Monument Protection Act (DSchG) and entered in the list of monuments of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate . It is in the Bullay district .
