The double tooth tensioner ( Odontopera bidentata ), also called tooth edge tensioner , is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the tensioners (Geometridae).

features

butterfly

The moths reach a wingspan of 33 to 45 millimeters. The forewings are usually gray-brown. The middle field of the same color is bordered by blackish transverse lines, which are often laid out in white. Two protruding teeth characteristic of the moth can be seen on the edge below the apex . The scientific name of the species is also derived from this characteristic from the Latin language: bis  = "twice" and dentatus  = "toothed". The outer dark transverse line of the fore wings continues on the hind wings. All wings each show a ring-shaped dark spot, which can also be seen on the underside of the wing. The thorax is very hairy.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars are brownish in color. However, other color variants can also occur. Two small bumps on the penultimate segment and two dark, capsule-like protrusions on the head are characteristic.

Geographical distribution and habitat

In its nominate form, the double tooth clamp occurs almost all over Europe up to the Urals . It is also spread across Siberia and the Amur - Ussuri region to the Kuriles and Japan . It prefers to colonize deciduous, mixed, quarry and bog forests as well as park landscapes.

Way of life

The moths that appear in a generation are nocturnal. The main flight time falls in the months of May and June. They like to visit artificial light sources . The caterpillars live polyphagous on the leaves of a large number of plants from June to September , for example on blackthorn ( Prunus spinosa ), mountain ash ( Sorbus aucuparia ) and common spruce ( Picea abies ) as well as on oaks - ( Quercus ), birches - ( Betula ), Poplar - ( Populus ), alder - ( Alnus ), willow - ( Salix ) or honeysuckle ( Lonicera ). The species overwinters as a pupa .

Danger

The double tooth tensioner occurs in all German federal states and is classified as not endangered.
