Dor kummt een Schipp ( Low German ; in High German: There comes a ship ) with the subtitle Plattdüütsch Gesangbook (=  Low German hymn book ) is a Low German hymn book for the Evangelical Lutheran and Evangelical Reformed churches in Lower Saxony and Bremen . The Low German church hymn book, first published in 1991, with a total of 260  hymns is now known and widespread throughout Northern Germany . The third edition was last published in 2009 with 44 new songs in a separately available appendix.

history

In 1986 the Evangelical Lutheran Regional Church of Hanover gave Johann Diedrich Bellmann (1930-2006), the author of numerous Low German works, who was teaching German at the Theological Academy of the Regional Church, a special regional church commission to create a Low German hymnbook. Bellmann worked with theology students to compile a collection of 260 Low German hymns.

In addition to the well-known Low German hymns, many well-known High German hymns have also been translated or transferred into the Low German language. Among other things, the work of the Pomeranian pastor Walter Georg Karl Schröder (1884–1955), who campaigned for “Plattdüütsch in de Kark” (High German: “Plattdeutsch in der Kirche / in Gottesdienst ”) and, among other things, already Low German, served as the basis Had collected, developed and published hymns. Schröder also advocated his own Low German liturgy , which was partially implemented in the hymn book created by Bellmann.

The hymn book was published in 1991 under the Low German title Dor kummt een Schipp. Plattdüütsch Gesangbook edited by the Working Group of Low German Pastors in Lower Saxony and published by Missionshandlung Hermannsburg in Hermannsburg . It quickly spread throughout northern Germany, and a revised second edition appeared in 1992.

Some Low German songs from the Dor kummt een Schipp hymn book have since been adopted and integrated into individual (northern German) regional parts of the Evangelical hymn book .

After Low German ( Low German) was adopted in the European Charter of Regional or Minority Languages in 1998 , there are increasing efforts in northern Germany to occasionally organize services with Low German texts in song (hymn), reading, prayer and interpretation. For example, on the Internet platform "Göttingen sermons on the Internet" some sermons in the Low German language published in which even songs from the hymnal Dor kummt een Schipp be used, and on the 30th German Protestant Church Congress in May 2005 in Hannover was also a Low German church service carried out, also with songs from Dor kummt een Schipp .

In 2009 an editorial team led by Pastor Anita Christians-Albrecht and Pastor Walter Scheller on behalf of the working group “Plattdüütsch in de Kark” Lower Saxony / Bremen published the third edition with an appendix. It contains 44 newer titles in the appendix, which is also available as a separate volume to supplement the two old editions.

Structure and content

In the first edition from 1991, the songbook contains 384 pages of the table of contents (pp. 5–14), liturgy proposals (“Plattdüütsch Kark”; pp. 15–36), the actual song part and an appendix.

The song section (pp. 37–359) is divided into 27 chapters. This part contains 260 songs in the Low German language, with 7 songs that otherwise have their place in Catholic worship ("ut de kathoolische Kark"), also included. 6 songs were taken from the Geneva Psalter and transferred into Low German, which are based on psalms and were already known in East Frisian Platt in East Frisia and were used there at church services.

Each song is presented with all stanzas and notes (mostly unanimous, without chords ).

The appendix contains a list of sources (pp. 360–375), a list of the High German songs that have been translated or transcribed into Low German in alphabetical order (pp. 376–379) and an afterword (pp. 380–384) by Pastor Hein Kroger ( Soltau ).
