history

Kemlitz was first mentioned in a document in 1217 and a church in 1253. The existing sacred building was badly damaged in the Thirty Years' War and only replaced by a new wooden building in 1715. In 1842 the place and with it the church patronage came into the possession of the landlord Carl August von Engelbrecht. Only a year later it burned in the village and the wooden church was destroyed. As early as 1847 Engelbrecht sold the estate to the heirs of the district councilor Friedrich Ernst and the chamber councilor Friedrich Wilhelm von Unger, who from then on managed it together. Under her influence, craftsmen built a new building in 1856 based on a design by the building inspector Rupprecht, which was renovated in the early 2000s. In the 21st century, the church is used for cultural events such as photo and art exhibitions.

Building description

The church was essentially made of yellowish brick and was built on a narrow foundation made of uncut and non-layered field stones . The semicircular apse is strongly drawn in and has a pressed, segment-arched gate on its east side. Above it is a surrounding cornice that continues on the nave .

Its east wall is windowless. In the center of the gable is a small, high rectangular opening. The gable has a frieze at the transition to the roof . The ship has a rectangular floor plan. There are three large arched windows on the north and south sides.

Access to the structure is through a large portal from the west side. It is accompanied by two coupled, laterally arranged round arches. Above it is a large ox-eye , which is accompanied by two laterally arranged, high rectangular openings. A small roof turret with a bell rises above the simple saddle roof .

Furnishing

The simple, wooden church furnishings come from the construction period. The altar with paraments by Magdalena Heinrich is framed by a semicircular sacristy . The pulpit was placed above it . Other church furnishings include a chandelier that was restored in 2016. The organ from 1865 cannot be played in 2019.
