The church

The Protestant village church of Oberoppurg is located in the municipality of Oberoppurg in the Saale-Orla district in Thuringia .

location

Oberoppurg is located on the southern edge of the Orlatal valley at the transition to the northern roof in the Thuringian Slate Mountains . The village church is located in the middle of the village on a hill, surrounded by a low wall.

church

The four by four meter choir is high Gothic . The late Gothic sacristy to the north has a pointed arched door and is vaulted with a late Gothic ribless cross vault. The pointed triumphal arch was later built with a round arch. The pointed arch window in the choir is around 650 years old. The 10 meter long and 6.9 meter wide nave appears to have been built in the 16th century and was overhauled, perhaps increased, in the 18th century. The barrel-covered gallery can be reached via a wooden outside staircase on the north side .

The interior of the fortified church has a rich altarpiece from 1680 with a painting of the Last Supper . Above that there is a large crucifixion painting framed by Corinthian columns. On the side of the consoles there are life-size, colorful figures of Matthew and Markus .

The roof and facade were restored in 2000.

tower

The high-Gothic choir tower of the parish church , two thirds of which is overgrown with ivy, dates from the Middle Ages , has a central pointed helmet and four corner towers and makes a very massive impression. The main tower and corner towers have conical domes. In 1783 the tower was renewed after a lightning strike and got the medieval hoods again.

The bells from 1520 and 1617 are intact.
