Village Church Werben (2017)

The village church Werben is the Protestant church of the village Werben (Spreewald) .

Architecture and history

The church was built from brick in the late Gothic style. The nave dates from the first half of the 15th century and was extended in 1743 by adding a choir with a three-sided end. To the south of the ship, a barrel vaulted vestibule was built at the time the ship was built . The vestibule is characterized by a pillar gable and portals designed as a pointed arch. The windows of the nave were redesigned in the baroque style. A gate on the southern side was bricked up.

The square church tower to the west of the nave and only slightly drawn into the nave dates from the second half of the 15th century. It has a height of 42 meters. Three upper floors rest on a smooth base. The tower facade is structured by panels arranged in rows. At the top there is a crenellated wreath, above which a pointed helmet made of stone rises. The tower hall located on the ground floor of the tower has a ribbed vault .

On October 1, 1751 , a separate community was formed in the north-west of the castle , which had previously belonged to Werben. In 1911 the portal on the west side was renewed. The same applies to the tracery frieze and eaves cornice on the nave.

The church burned down during the campaigns for courtship in April 1945. The reconstruction lasted until 1962. A restoration of the upper part of the tower took place in 1993.

Furnishing

In the nave there are galleries on four sides , with two storeys on the northern and southern sides. Like the galleries, the formerly painted beam ceiling was reconstructed in 1960 after the destruction in 1945. The ceiling painting, mainly showing crops, earned the church the nickname “Vegetable Church”. The other wooden furnishings come from the first half of the 18th century and originally stood in the village church of Riedebeck . Mention should be made of the pulpit with a square pulpit and a picture of the crucifixion connected to the parish chair surrounded by a wooden lattice . In addition to the floating baptismal angel , the altarpiece, restored in 1958, is also remarkable.

On the outside of the north wall there are eight 18th century gravestones belonging to the von Schönfeldt , von Pannwitz and von Stutterheim families .
