The Faistenau village linden tree , a so-called thousand - year - old linden tree , is the landmark of the municipality of Faistenau in Flachgau , Land Salzburg . The linden tree characterizes the village square and is protected as a natural monument .

The hollow and therefore accessible trunk of the linden tree has a circumference of 9.10 meters, the linden tree itself is 20.5 meters high (as of 2008). The exact age can no longer be determined today. Due to the relatively late settlement of the area in the 12th century, however, it is assumed that the linden tree was planted by the first settlers as a symbol of community, even before the noble von Thurn donated the church in 1324 . The village around the village square was then referred to as in the Geswant because it had been a (fire) clearing area .

A hollow western branch of the linden tree is still called the “sermon chair” and can be reached from within through the tree. During the Jesuit mission , which began on Sunday October 25th, 1863 and lasted until November 2nd, 1863, All Souls Day , 19 of the 26 sermons were delivered from this “pulpit”. The Salzburger Kirchenblatt reads: […] “An object of general admiration was the large linden tree on the square in front of the church - it measures 4½ perimeter or 27 feet - to which the pulpit was attached; With very little effort a very comfortable staircase of 9 steps was made through the beautifully overgrown cavity of the linden tree, so that the preacher stepped out of the inside of the tree onto the pulpit. meaning

Their importance is visible in the municipal coat of arms, which shows the linden tree in the center and is covered by two rafters that were taken from the coat of arms of Herr von Thurn. On certain occasions, groups in costume , choirs and pageants are set up in front of it. Every three years Jedermann is listed under her , the next season is planned for summer 2022. The linden tree is one of the sights of the municipality.

Friedrich Pesendorfer wrote a poem about the linden tree, which was published in the Linzer Volksblatt in 1912 .

The Faistenau lime tree.
I am from the village of Linde,
The Linden from Faistenau,
My trunk with rotten bark
rises high in the blue of the sky.

I stand for many hundred years,
an ancient linden tree,
and I see the generations,
they come and go like in a dream.

And
a baptized
person comes past the linden tree into the house of God, So I
also pronounce my blessing on the child .

Approaching the wedding celebration
The bride in the myrtle wreath,
So she dances
the wedding dance with her suitor around me.

To the tender human child
,
to the man in trouble and quarrel, to the old man in the last hour
I give my faithful 'escort'.

And lowers on the cemetery wall
a heart to rest,
so I cover the
grave with flowers in quiet mourning .

My hour will also strike,
then my rotten building will break,
and the legend still brings the news of
the linden tree from Faistenau.
