Dorothea Rockburne

Dorothea Rockburne (born October 18, 1934 in Verdun , Québec , Canada ; lives in New York City , USA ) is a contemporary Canadian abstract painter .

life and work

Dorothea Rockburne attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Montreal and the Montreal Museum School. In 1950 she moved to the USA to study mathematics at Black Mountain College with the mathematician Max Dehn , who influenced her work for a lifetime. She also studied with Franz Kline , Philip Guston , John Cage and Merce Cunningham .

She also met up with fellow student Robert Rauschenberg . In 1955, Rockburne moved to New York City , where she met many of the leading artists and poets of the day. In 1971 she had her first solo exhibition at the Bykert Gallery in New York.

Rockburne has been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters since 2001 and was elected a Full Member ( NA ) of the National Academy of Design in 2002.

Dorothea Rockburne draws her artistic motivation primarily from her interest in mathematics and astronomy . In her abstract art, she uses the classic painting and drawing techniques, but also creates collages and works that are made from mixed materials such as pressed cardboard, paper, nails, paint and crude oil.

In 1972, her works were shown at Documenta 5 in Kassel in the Individual Mythologies : Processes department . She was also represented as an artist at Documenta 6 in 1977.

Also in 1972 she won the Painting Award from the Art Institute of Chicago and the Guggenheim Fellowship. In 1974 she was awarded the National Endowment for the Arts .
