Dorothee Richter (2012)

Dorothee Richter (* in Ludwigsburg ) is a German author, art historian and curator for contemporary art . She is Professor of Contemporary Curating at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Reading and the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) and head of the postgraduate program in Curating at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK). Her focus is on Fluxus , feminist theory, and political aspects of curating.

life and work

Richter studied fine arts and English and then did his doctorate. Her dissertation deals with the art movement Fluxus. From 1999 to 2009 she interviewed Fluxus artists. The thesis was published as a book entitled Fluxus. Art equals life? Myths about Authorship, Production, Gender, and Community published in 2012. In 2013 she published a film with her interview material together with Ronald Kolb. Flux Us Now! Fluxus explored with a camera was shown for the first time in April 2013 in the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart , followed by performances in the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst in Zurich, in the Museum Tinguely in Bern, in the Lentos Art Museum Linz and at various European art schools.

After graduating, she worked as a research assistant at the Society for Contemporary Art Bremen, since 1998 as a lecturer at the University of Bremen , the Merz Akademie Stuttgart, the École des Beaux Arts in Geneva and the University of Lüneburg .

From 1999 to the end of 2003 Richter was artistic director of the Künstlerhaus Bremen, where she curated a program dealing with feminist topics, urban situations, power relations and institutional criticism.

Since 2005 she has been the head of the postgraduate program in Curating (CAS / MAS) at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK). She is also co-founder of a practice-oriented doctoral program in cooperation with the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) and the Department of Fine Arts at the University of Reading .

Dorothee Richter has two daughters and works and lives in Zurich .

Curatorial work

As artistic director of the Künstlerhaus Bremen:

From 2003 to 2008, Dorothee Richter organized the traveling exhibition and the Curating Degree Zero Archive together with Barnaby Drabble . The traveling exhibition began with 50 different curatorial positions and was shown in 17 different locations around the world. The archive is now in the library of the Zurich University of the Arts and documents the work of over 100 curators for contemporary art.

In addition, Richter has been the editor of the web journal on-curating.org since 2008, a magazine that deals with curatorial theory and practice.
