The Thier Brewery , also known as the Thier Brewery or the Dortmund Thier Brewery, is a brewery company with a long tradition in Dortmund , which has since become part of the Radeberger Group of Dr. August Oetker KG . Since 1996 the beer has been brewed without its own active brewery at the Dortmund Actien brewery .

history

Demolition of the Thier brewery in 2009

The Thier brewery was founded on July 2, 1854 by the Dortmund merchants Wilhelm von Hövel, Gustav Thier and Heinrich Sonnenschein as the “Brewery von Hövel, Thier & Co.”. The establishment of the Thier brewery was seen as a consequence of the introduction of bottom-fermented brewing, the Dortmund export . In 1875 the Thier family took over the entire company shares.

After Gustav Thier's death in 1883, the company was initially run by his son Gustav Thier junior. and the son-in-law Ludwig Freiherr Spiegel to and from Peckelsheim. The brewery was renamed "Brewery Thier & Co.". In 1888 the Dortmund entrepreneur Josef Cremer took over the company from his nephew.

The Thier brewery got involved in sports sponsorship early on . The local athletics club and former Bundesliga handball team OSC Dortmund was sometimes called OSC Thier Dortmund . In 1992, the Dortmund Thier brewery was taken over by the local competitor Kronen Privatbrauerei Dortmund . In 1996 this was taken over by the Dortmunder Actien-Brauerei (DAB) belonging to the Radeberger Group . Production was relocated to the DAB location in the north of Dortmund. "Thier Pils" is still brewed by the Dortmund Actien brewery to this day. Bottling was discontinued on July 31, 2015 so that the brand is only available as draft beer in some restaurants. To maintain the traditional brand, a fan club, the "THIERfreunde Dortmund", was founded in October 2015.

The administration building and the production facilities of the Thier brewery were located within the former ramparts of the city of Dortmund. The administration building on Hiltropwall is used today by the city of Dortmund. The production buildings behind it were demolished in 2009 for the new Thier-Galerie , a shopping center operated by ECE Projektmanagement . The Thier gallery is also reached through the former entrance to the brewery administration. On the ground floor of the building is the Hövels house brewery with catering, where Hövels Original beer is still brewed today.
