In 1819 Heinrich Dietrich Thomas von Gisbert von Romberg I leased a plot of land and a building in Brünninghausen (now part of Dortmund ), and ran an inn and brewery there (“Zum Kaiserkrug”). In 1843 the "Kaiser Brewery C. Thomas Brünninghausen near Dortmund" was founded.

In 1868 a beer output of around 1100 hl / year was achieved with five employees. In 1872 the "C. Thomas Brewery (Imperial Brewery)" started operating as a steam brewery. In 1894 the brewery was entered in the company register of the Royal District Court of Hörde as the company "Kaiserbrauerei C. Thomas" and the owner of the brewery, Carl Thomas zu Brünninghausen. In 1894 the "Kaiser-Brauerei C. Thomas AG " was founded.

The brewery was sold to the Dortmund knight brewery in 1924 , operations ceased and the building was demolished in 1932 years. In 1956, the “Zum Kaiserkrug” brewery restaurant was also torn down.
