HÖVELS brewery in Dortmund

In 1518, the Dortmund patrician family von Hövel acquired brewing rights on the Hövel-Hof am Hohen Wall in downtown Dortmund. In 1854, Wilhelm von Hövel and Gustav Thier founded the brewery in its current form. Today's recipe for Hövels Original came onto the market for the first time in 1893, and according to the manufacturer, the beer is still brewed in the same form today. Due to a shortage of raw materials, production was initially stopped during the world wars and resumed at the same location in 1984.
