Dota Underlords is a computer strategy game from 2019 that combines the principle of chess with the heroes from the Dota series. It supports crossplay between the individual platforms and is one of the pioneers in the auto-battler genre .

Gameplay

As in chess, the game is played in a turn-based manner on an 8 × 8 field . Your own playing field is 4 fields long. In each round you are proposed five heroes. These relate to the current level of the player, are divided into the classes hunter, warrior and mage and are bought with gold. After the placement phase, the placed heroes automatically fight against each other.

Up to eight players can play against each other in a match. Alternatively, you can play against computer opponents in a single player . By playing, the player can collect experience points and gold to improve the characters in the game. The player can also purchase different items for combat.

Development and publication

Dota Auto Chess was developed as a mod for the computer game Dota 2 by Drodo Studios and was first published on January 4, 2019 on Steam . By May 2019, the mod had over eight million players and is considered to be the start of the computer game genre Auto-Battler / Auto Chess , where special characters and skills are played on a chessboard.

The beta version for Android was released on April 18, 2019 and the beta version for iOS devices on May 22, 2019 . An independent game version was released exclusively for the Epic Games Store on June 10th . Shortly afterwards, Valve Corporation released its own free-to-play version called Dota Underlords . Although the two publish separate versions, they want to support each other.

On June 20, 2019, Dota Underlords was released in early access for Android, iOS, MacOS, Windows and Linux . A press announcement took place in May. After just a few days, the game had been downloaded over 1.5 million times and has an average player count of 200,000. It was therefore the fourth most played game on Steam for a short time . A free Battle Pass was released in July 2019 and will be charged later.

Despite the demarcation and collaboration between Dota Auto Chess and Dota Underlords , the latter is accused of being a clone. Parallels are also drawn to the computer game Artifact , which was also developed by Valve . The Süddeutsche Zeitung compares the auto battler hype from Dota Underlords and Teamfight Tactics with the battle royale hype. In a GameStar survey, Dota Underlords ranks 47% ahead of Team Fight Tactics (34.61%) and Dota Auto Chess (18.31%).

Among other things, the beginner-friendly gameplay, crossplay, graphics and soundtrack are praised . Problems with the AI ​​and in the online match, the lack of German voice output and performance problems on old smartphones were criticized. The game balance due to team building is also criticized.

In June 2019, Riot Games announced that the Auto-Battler mode Teamfight Tactics would be integrated into the League of Legends game as inspiration. The release of Teamfight Tactics , among other things, contributed to the fact that the player numbers of Dota Underlords have halved.
