Douglas Eric Smith (born May 17, 1963 in Ottawa , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player (center) who played for the Los Angeles Kings , Buffalo Sabers , Edmonton Oilers , Vancouver Canucks and Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League from 1981 to 1990 played.
Career
During his junior years, Smith played for the Ottawa 67’s in the OMJHL . After a strong season, he was selected as the second player in the first round in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft by the Los Angeles Kings .
The Kings brought him into their squad immediately for the 1981/82 season . At that time they were very strong in attack with players like Marcel Dionne , Dave Taylor , Charlie Simmer and Bernie Nicholls , so that Smith was unable to take on a dominant role in the team. However, it increased from year to year. During the 1985/86 season he was given to the Buffalo Sabers with Brian Engblom .
After two years in Buffalo, in which he also temporarily played for the Rochester Americans in the AHL , the Edmonton Oilers signed him in October 1986 in the Waiver Draft . He had 19 appearances for Edmonton, some more in the AHL with the Cape Breton Oilers , before moving to the Vancouver Canucks just five months later . In late February 1990 he moved to the Pittsburgh Penguins , his last position in the NHL.
In the summer of 1990 he moved to Austria, where he played for EC VSV and VEU Feldkirch .
