Douglas Smith (special effects artist)

Douglas "Doug" Smith ( California ) is a VFX supervisor , who for Independence Day the Oscar was awarded.

Life

The son of military personnel, he grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area , but was also in Morocco and Puerto Rico in his childhood . At the beginning of his career he was employed by the company Industrial Light & Magic , which was newly founded by George Lucas . There he worked as a camera and production assistant for the film Star Wars . He then worked at Apogee Productions until 1992 , initially for the pilot episode of Kampfstern Galactica , then for films such as Star Trek: The Movie , Firefox and Spaceballs . True Lies followed in 1994 for the special effects company Digital Domain .

In 1997 he received the Oscar in the category Best Visual Effects for Roland Emmerich's science fiction film Independence Day together with Volker Engel , Clay Pinney and Joe Viskocil . Since 1998 he has been working for the Rhythm & Hues Studios, for which he works as a VFX supervisor . He was involved in the films The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas , Dr. Dolittle 2 and Evan Almighty involved.

He is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , the Visual Effects Society, and the Directors Guild of America .
