Douwe Durk Breimer (born November 24, 1943 in Oudemirdum ) is a Dutch pharmacologist .

Life

The son of Ids Breimer (* 1908) and Johanna Hoeckstra studied at the University of Groningen from 1962 to 1970 . He received his doctorate on January 1, 1974 at Radboud University Nijmegen with the treatise Pharmacokinetics of hypnotic drugs (freely translated into German: The pharmacokinetics of hypnotic drugs ). On April 14, 1975, he was appointed professor of mathematics and natural sciences specializing in pharmacology at the University of Leiden on the basis of a royal decree . He took up this position on May 1, 1975 and gave his introductory speech Farmacotherapie op maat on October 29, 1976 (freely translated into German: Pharmacotherapy made to measure ).

On November 3, 1981, his field of expertise was expanded to include pharmacotherapy and on April 24, 1986, he moved to the medical faculty. In 1987 he became a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences . During that time he wrote a variety of specialist articles and books. He was director of the Center for Pharmaceutical Research in Leiden / Amsterdam from 1992 to 2001 and was elected rector of the Leiden Alma Mater in 2001. He passed this position on to his successor Paul van der Heijden in 2007 when he retired .

Breimer has also received many international awards. The University of Ghent , Uppsala University , Semmelweis University in Budapest , University of Navarra , Hiroshima University in Tokyo , University of London and University of Montreal have awarded him honorary doctorates. He has been a member of the Academia Europaea since 1992 . He has also been an honorary citizen of Leiden since October 2, 2006 .
