Paul Doyle Caiafa (born September 15, 1964 in Lodi , New Jersey ) alias Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein is an American rock musician, who was best known for his work as the guitarist of the horror punk band Misfits .

Career

Caiafa joined Misfits, which had been founded two years earlier, in 1979, but did not make his first official appearance until Halloween 1980, and was only 16 years old at the time. In contrast to many other musicians who were temporarily involved in the band, he kept his place for many years. After the Misfits split up under Glenn Danzig in 1983, he and his brother Jerry Only founded the band Kryst the Conqueror, with whom he recorded an album that was never officially released. Some songs from it were instead released on an EP titled Deliver Us From Evil in 1989 . In 1995 the band broke up, at the same time the Misfits were revived with a new line-up. Shortly after the turn of the millennium, however, Caiafa got out. In a conversation that was held later, he cited the reason that due to the numerous changes in members in the band, the necessary cohesion and identification were missing. In an interview with Kin Kats magazine in 2009, he said: “There was no band structure and no singer. And there is still no singer or new material. That wasn't what I wanted. I wanted a new band with my own material, not a cover band. But someone saw it differently. "

Since 2005 he has been working on his own band project, Gorgeous Frankenstein . In the same year he was a guest on the tour of the band Danzig of his former Misfits colleague Glenn Danzig . Together they played some of the classics from their previous band. For many, the cooperation was surprising due to the legal disputes that Glenn Danzig led with the other band members after the separation from the Misfits.

Equipment

Since his beginnings with the Misfits, Caiafa has played his guitars, which have changed over time, via Ampeg Lee Jackson power amplifiers, which were actually designed as bass amplifiers. From 1980 to 1987 he played either an Ibanez Iceman guitar or a BC Rich Mockingbird (both in black). Since 1987 he has only played guitars that he designed himself and that became known under the name Annihilator . The first models were made of wood, but for a few years he has been playing a model made of CFRP and metal, which he also made himself. The American manufacturer Oktober Guitars offers replicas of these guitars. The strings of his choice are his signature model from Dean Markley, which go under the name Skullbusters . Brother Jerry also got a signature model; appropriately enough for the bass.

Others

  • His brother Gerald Caiafa, known as Jerry Only , is the bassist and founding member of the Misfits. This, and singer Glenn Danzig , taught Paul to play the guitar at the age of 13. Doyle describes his relationship with his brother as broken today. They have no contact, Gerald no longer speaks to him.
  • Paul Annihilator guitar was also part of its of 20th Century Toys out brought action figure that represented him in Misfits gear.
  • He was married to Stephanie Bellars, the former wife and manager of wrestler Randy Savage , who became known as Gorgeous George . The two have a daughter whom they called Boriss out of admiration for the actor Boris Karloff . Caiafa has four children in total.
  • The muscular caiafa was also briefly active in the wrestling scene.
  • According to his own statements, Doyle creates his characteristic hairstyle, the “Devillock”, with the help of the lubricant KY Jelly : “Other people use it to shove things up their buttocks, I use it to style my hair. It does not sting your eyes, does not contain alcohol and dries quickly. But I also fix the Devillock with elastic bands. "
  • Caiafa has suffered from partial blindness since 2017, when the retina of one of his eyes became detached during a tour, whereupon the musician had to undergo four operations.
