Dracophilus is a plant kind from the family of aizoaceae (Aizoaceae). The botanical name of the genus is derived from the Greek words δράκων (dracon) for "dragon" and θίλος (philos) for "friend" and refers to the place where the first plants were found, the dragon mountainin the restricted diamond area.

description

The plants of the genus Dracophilus grow compact and become somewhat lawn-shaped with age. A branch bears six to eight thick, triangular-shaped leaves . Their keel and edges are rounded or toothed, their epidermis is smooth.

White to purple flowers stand above bracts . They have five sepals . The stamens initially form an upright cone, which later develops into a cylinder. The brown or orange-colored nectarium is designed as a ring.

The eight (rarely to 14) fächrigen to ten capsule fruits are flat at the top and a funnel shape at the base. Their compartments cover about two thirds of the capsule. They have wide, rectangular valve wings and no closure bodies. The swelling bars run almost parallel. The papillary, short pear-shaped seeds are brown and 0.6 to 0.8 millimeters long and 0.5 to 0.6 millimeters wide.

Systematics and distribution

The distribution area of the genus Dracophilus extends from Lüderitz in Namibia southwards to the extreme north of the South African province of North Cape . The plants grow on limestone or sandstone gravel and mainly inhabit plains. The annual rainfall is less than 100 millimeters and falls mostly in winter.

The description as a subgenus of the genus Juttadinteria was made in 1926 by Gustav Schwantes . Together with Kurt Dinter , he established the genus Dracophilus in 1927 . The lectotype is Juttadinteria simpsonii . According to Heidrun Hartmann (* 1942) the genus Dracophilus includes the following two species:
