history

The settlement of today's village Draganowo began at the end of the 12th and beginning of the 13th century. The name goes back to the first name of the founder Dragan. The village was founded before the defeat of Bulgaria by the Ottomans (1396). The river and the vast fields allowed the development of fisheries and livestock. Due to the fertile soil, vegetable cultivation began early on. This was considered to be the main source of income and for centuries it provided food for the village population. The first school in Draganowo was housed in a storage cellar, later in a warehouse, until a public building was built in 1840. Towards the end of the Ottoman rule (1878) there were three schools in Draganowo, in which a total of more than 1000 students were taught at the same time. Between the two world wars, Draganowo reached the highest population in its history with 9000 inhabitants.

Residents

Draganowo has about 2600 inhabitants. The largest share is accounted for by the ethnic Bulgarians , further parts by the Roma , ethnic Turks and some Western European immigrants. As in most Bulgarian villages, the average age in Draganowo is relatively high, but still moderate compared to other villages in the area. There are 1,400 buildings in Draganowo, 990 of which are residential houses [3 ???]. Most of them are single-family houses with a courtyard, but there are also a few two- and three-family houses and one larger apartment building. The average yard size is 1000 m², which corresponds to the more common area of one decar in Bulgaria . Traditional fruit and vegetable cultivation can also be seen in Draganowo, because many residents use their garden area beyond their own needs and sell their goods at the farmers' markets in Gorna Oryachowiza and Veliko Tarnowo. A practice that continues into old age. It is also not uncommon to buy or rent additional gardens in order to increase yields and income. Employees who cannot find work in local companies and shops mostly work in Gorna Orjachowiza or Veliko Tarnowo. Quite a few live in small apartments in the city and only spend the weekends in Draganowo, often in a house with their parents or grandparents.

Approx. 10–20% of the houses in Draganowo are empty. With far more people leaving or dying than they move in, this number is likely to increase in the next few years.

Economy and Infrastructure

The main industry in Draganowo is still the cultivation and trade in fruit and vegetables. There are also producers of gears and yoghurt pots as well as various small businesses based in the village. You can also find farms and livestock farms there.

Others

Most of the Bulgarians who emigrated to Hungary in the 18th and 19th centuries came from the villages of Draganowo and Polikraischte . These emigrants make up the Bulgarian minority in Hungary today. At this time, many of Draganowo's residents went to what is now the Czech Republic and the German-speaking area to work as gardeners. These "Draganowski Gradinari" ("gardeners from Draganowo") were seen as experienced and competent and were welcome workers abroad. As a testimony to this, many residential and farm buildings in Draganowo are built in Czech, German or Austrian architectural styles. Once a year, together with the harvest festival , a holiday is dedicated to these gardeners.

One of two pastors in the country who also practice as general practitioners lives and works in Draganowo. In 2010 the main prize was a house in Draganowo as part of the national TV show 'Willkommen in Bulgaria', which was followed with great interest. The winner, Horassio Gonzales from Mexico, accepted the house but does not currently live in Draganowo.

There is a memorial in the village with the text of the International . This monument, like the wall drawing by Josef Stalin and Georgi Dimitrov, was erected at the post office during the times of the People's Republic of Bulgaria .
