Wire radio in Italy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The cable radio in Italy , on Italian Filodiffusione called, is a service for radio transmission via the telephone line .

history

The service was introduced in 1958 by the Rai in cooperation with SIP (today Telecom Italia ), because at that time the terrestrial radio coverage was not yet available nationwide and the sound quality of the broadcasts on medium wave often left a lot to be desired. On January 4, 1959, the Filodiffusione began their regular broadcasting operations. Cable broadcasting guaranteed clear sound and availability across the country. In addition to the three national stations, the radio audience was offered two further, uninterrupted programs - one with light music and one with classical music . After the introduction of VHF radio (using frequency modulation ) and the advent of private radio , wire radio was increasingly pushed into the corner of classical music lovers. With the conversion of the telephone lines from analog to digital technology in the 1990s, complete coverage of the national territory was also abandoned. Today only larger cities, such as the main towns of the provinces and cities with high population density, are supplied.

Wire radio today

The Rai's wire radio service ( Rai Filodiffusione ) now comprises six channels. The first three broadcast the national radio programs ( Rai Radio 1 , Rai Radio 2 and Rai Radio 3 ). Rai Radio FD 4 delivers light music 24 hours a day without commercial breaks and Rai Radio FD 5 broadcasts classical music in stereo. In the actual wire radio process, FD 5 occupies two channels, each of which transmits the signal for the right and left loudspeaker. The frequencies for transmission over the telephone line are: 178 kHz (channel 1 with radio 1 ), 211 kHz (channel 2 with radio 2 ), 244 kHz (channel 3 with radio 3 ), 277 kHz (channel 4 with radio FD 4 ) , 310 kHz (channel 5 with radio FD 5 , right tone), 343 kHz (channel 6 with radio FD 5 , left tone).

Nowadays the two wire radio transmitters (radio FD 4 and 5) can also be received via numerous other transmission channels, which offer a significantly better signal quality compared to the telephone line. According to the Rai, there are approximately 370,000 wireline subscriptions left today. It is estimated that the services of the Rai Filodiffusione reach almost 2 million listeners every day.

Since 1997, cable radio stations in are DAB mode transfer and since 1999 they are as RealAudio - Stream over the Internet received too. However, nationwide coverage in high quality is provided by satellite in stereo at a bit rate of 192 kbps. Since 16 January 2006 Radio FD 4 in is DVB-T - Multiplex Rai Mux A received too.

In June 2003 the Internet portal www.filodiffusione.rai.it was opened, which has become a valuable source of information for listeners, as it provides a remarkable amount of information material (reviews, informative pages, links) as well as an overview of the broadcasts offers the entire program content.
