Dras is a place in Kargil District in the Indian Union Territory of Ladakh .

It's on National Highway 1D . The place is also called "the gateway to Ladakh". Dras became known in the summer of 1999 when the Pakistani army invaded Jammu and Kashmir . During the Kargil War , the place was regularly bombed. At the end of the war, the Indian army recaptured the area and the surrounding district.

history

Dras ( Shina : Humas دراس), "the gateway to Ladakh", is at an altitude of 3230  m . The surrounding mountains reach heights between 5000  m and 6000  m . The Dras Valley begins at the foot of the Zoji La pass . The locals are known to have long climbed the pass even in difficult weather conditions, such as late autumn or early spring when there are still snowstorms in the region. They transport goods and help travelers. In the heyday of trans-Asian trade they had a monopoly of carriers. The inhabitants of Dras can be described as "the guardians of the gate of Ladakh".

Dras is located at an average altitude of 3280  m , 56 km from Kargil in the center of the valley that bears his name.

Trekking

  • Dras is the starting point for a three-day hike into the Suru valley along a mountain range that separates the two valleys. The path leads over the 450  m high Amba La pass .
  • In two days you can reach Saliskot from Dras via the Laser La .

climate

Dras is the coldest place in India. Due to the altitude there is a sub-polar climate. Winters are cold with an average minimum temperature of -22 ° C, but down to -45 ° C in mid-winter. Winter begins in mid-October and ends in mid-May. Summer starts in June and lasts until early September. Summer has an average temperature of 15 ° C and little rainfall. The precipitation falls almost all in the months from December to May, when Dras receives precipitation in the form of snow. The average annual precipitation is 470 mm.

population

The residents of Dras are Dard who are believed to have immigrated to Ladakh from Central Asia . They speak Shina , a Dardish language . Most of the residents of Dras are Muslim , there are few Buddhists . The population is made up of 64% men and 36% women. There are a total of 1201 inhabitants in Dras.
