The Evangelical Lutheran Trinity Church is located in the town of Eisfeld in the Hildburghausen district and is one of the largest and most imposing sacred buildings of the late Gothic in southern Thuringia .

history

The construction of the hall church , first consecrated to St. Nicholas , began at the instigation of the Würzburg cathedral provost Kilian von Bibra with the construction of the three-aisled nave in 1488. The choir across the middle aisle was built in 1505. The square tower was completed around 1530. In 1525 the pastor Nicolaus Kindt preached Protestant for the first time in the church. Justus Jonas the Elder , a friend of Martin Luther , was pastor from 1553 to 1555. In 1565 a lightning strike destroyed the tower, in 1601 the nave of the church burned down during a city fire and in 1632 the troops of Wallenstein's city and church burned down. The case destroyed Gothic vault was in the course of reconstruction by a wooden Renaissance - coffered ceiling replaced. In 1651 the church was rededicated as the Holy Trinity Church. After the artillery bombardment at the end of the Second World War , the upper tower floors were rebuilt. In the course of the interior renovation carried out between 1960 and 1962, the second gallery in the side aisles was removed. During the renovation of the choir in 1988, two consecration crosses were uncovered.

architecture

The church has a three-aisled, five-bay late Gothic hall . The church tower is massive and square on the north side of the choir. The three- bay choir, spanned by a beautiful net vault with diamond crossings, is lower but the same width as the nave with its high gable roof and a flat coffered ceiling . Round Renaissance pillars support the ceiling. The south and north gates have remarkable portals with protruding canopies , where the tracery is entwined around bars . The sacristy is decorated with coats of arms.

During the tour of the church, the church tower can be climbed to the viewing gallery, from which there is a good view of the ice field and the ridges of the Thuringian Forest .
